Macropsia
Macropsia is a series of large-scale sculptural photo-object works. Expansive 5 metre long prints snake through aluminium frameworks, forced to occupy a spatial dimension. The prints themselves are huge enlargements (150 X) of the surfaces of 35mm slide transparencies. At this scale tiny imperfections, fibres and scratches on the film surface are made visible and become foregrounded as the main subject of the work. This veneer of accumulated dust, scratches and stains embedded in the fabric of the image reveals the ghostly trace of human contact and entropy slowly playing out.
Macropsia is a neurological condition affecting human visual perception. Objects appear larger throughout the visual field, often causing disorientation and even fear. Through this work, Rapley relates to his own experience of this condition, and others including hyperphantasia and spatio-temporal distortion phenomena , identifying them as factors contributing to his interest in disorientating neurological conditions that complicate visual perception.
